Galatians 2:20b

"... the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

The Heroics of Paddy Murphy

This is basically what I heard at lunch today from the table next to mine. More or less. I've filled in some details.
(1942...somewhere in America)

He was a short lad. But that had never stopped Paddy Murphy before. He was off to join the Army and kill some Nazis. Never mind that he was only 17.

"Paddy Murphy?" yelled the enlisting officer. "Here!" came a squeaky voice from somewhere in the crowd. Paddy fought his way to front of the group of eager young men. "Here!" he called again. The officer looked down....way down. "Well...so you wanna join the army eh sonny?" "Sir, yes sir!" replied Paddy.
The officer laughed at Paddy's enthusiasm. "Well we'll find a spot for you distributing rations from the commissary. Sign here."  But Paddy never planned on working in no commissary. "Sir, I'm signing up to kill Germans!" The whole room erupted in laughter. Pointing and laughing at young Paddy.

But kill Germans, Paddy did.

Not 3 days after the first Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, Paddy Murphy's small frame sat astride a huge galloping horse that plowed its way through the fields of France. Firing from his hip like some sort of wild camouflaged cowboy. Once he spotted a German soldier in a trench at the exact same time the German spotted him. The German began to raise his rifle for a shot at Paddy but he was too slow...much too slow. Without a second thought, Paddy fired from the hip and hit the German square between the eyes. "Dirty nazi." Paddy spat.

By the time the war ended, young Paddy Murphy had become a Sergeant and probably even an officer....at least that's what the old guy at the table thought....

Immutability

unchangeable; changeless.

God is not man that he should change his mind.

Excerpt

of a prayer from Spurgeon...

"We thank you Lord, for the love without beginning that chose us before the earth ever was, for the love without measure that entered into covenant for our redemption, for the love without failure that in due time appeared in the person of Christ and worked out our redemption, for the love that has never changed, though we have wandered, for the love that remains faithful even when we are unfaithful."

The Normal Christian Life

The following quote is from Watchman Nee's (yes, his real name) book "The Normal Christian Life" and is something I've found extremely valuable.

Speaking on Faith

"If we resort to our senses to discover the truth, we shall find Satan's lies are often enough true to our own experience; but if we refuse to accept as binding anything that contradicts God's Word and maintain an attitude of faith in Him alone, we shall find instead that Satan's lies begin to dissolve and that our experience is coming progressively to tally with that Word."

In other words, when feelings and emotions and experiences contradict God's Word, they are false. If we refuse to give life to such feelings and maintain "an attitude of faith in Him alone" we'll see those feelings melt away and our experiences will begin to align more and more with God's Word.

I love this word of encouragement.

Busy bee

A lot going on this week. (Happy New Year by the way!) Wrapping up a magazine style print piece for Summit on top of some video work. So I'm staying busy.

Here's a thought from yesterday's reading in Acts 7.

God allows Stephen's death at the hands of an angry mob. That mob, led by Saul (soon to be Paul...God is ironic) then turns on other Christians in Jerusalem. Christians in turn flee, taking with them the good news of the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth, fulfilling at least in part the great commission which was given 6 chapters earlier. ( I say in part because it's a command that doesn't stop being a command until people stop being born)

Stephen's faith-filled, Spirit-inspired obedience, even unto death, leads to the gospel spreading out into the entire known world.  God is sovereign. He wills to use us to carry out his plan. Doesn't mean that it'll be pretty. But God WILL be glorified in us if we let Him.

I love this plan. It's hard to swallow but it's amazing to see God at work. God even allows Stephen a glimpse of His glory, prior to death. Talk about a boost of faith to see His plan through.

Sorry I know this is ramblyish but I like think/typing sometimes.  Oh one other thing. If God commands us to do it, (like the Great Commission) He's still the One in charge of getting it done. We can obey and experience the joy and privilege or we can step out of the way and miss out...but God's plan will be accomplished.

Acts is awesome...go read Stephen's speech (chapter 7) to the Jewish council for what it looks like to be saturated with Scripture and filled with the Holy Spirit. I want that kind of power and fruit in my life.
